A skin cancer diagnosis can be terrifying whether you live in Plano, Texas, or anywhere else. However, the good news is that skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early at a skin cancer check-up.
AT DSA Dermatology, we can remove many types of skin cancer, but how do you know when you need a screening?
How to Know if You Need Skin Cancer Screening
If you experience changes in your skin, it’s a good idea to have them evaluated. These changes can include the following:
- New skin growth
- Moles
- Other skin concerns
Also, people over 50 should have a full-body skin cancer screening yearly. Equally important, if you have a family history of skin cancer, it’s a good idea to stay on top of your skin cancer check-ups.
Different Types of Skin Cancer
There are several types of skin cancer, and these three are the most common.
Basal cell carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma is often found in people with lighter skin, but people with darker skin can also be at risk.
Squamous cell carcinoma
This cancer occurs most commonly in skin areas frequently exposed to the sun. This can include your arms, face, neck, chest, and back. Squamous cell carcinoma can grow deep into the skin, and it usually looks like a scaly patch, a wound that fails to heal, and firm red bumps.
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer because it’s most likely to spread to other parts of the body. This cancer can form within an existing mole, or it can form in a newly developed mole.
Here are the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma.
- Asymmetrical: Shape that isn’t uniform
- Border: Irregular or not well-defined
- Color: More than one shade or color
- Diameter: Growths of 6mm or larger
- Evolution: Moles that change in size, color, or shape
