Intense pulsed light treatment (IPL for short) is a type of laser skin rejuvenation that can address several common skin issues. At DSA Dermatology in Plano, Texas, our patients have been enjoying the benefits of impressive results from IPL laser treatments.
What is IPL Photofacial?
IPL laser treatments are delivered through a handheld device that sends the light energy into the deep layers of skin. This energy is absorbed by pigmented cells to address sun damage, dark spots, and other conditions. IPL uses broadband light instead of single wavelength light, which makes it effective at breaking up the pigment so it can be absorbed and eliminated naturally by the body. Patients enjoy the stunning results and zero downtime associated with IPL laser treatments at DSA Dermatology.
Common skin conditions treated with IPL:
- Age spots
- Broken blood vessels
- Sun damage
How IPL treatment works
IPL laser treatments usually take about 30 minutes to be completed depending on what area of the body is being treated. Before treatment, a cooling topical anesthetic is used on the skin to make the session more comfortable. The handheld device is directed over the desired area as it delivers the laser light energy. Most people report that the procedure produces a slight stinging sensation similar to a snapped rubber band. Once the treatment is complete, the skin is cleaned, and a moisturizing lotion with sunscreen may be applied. A cool compress may also be used following treatment for highly sensitive skin.
Following IPL treatment, patients may notice that pigmented spots appear darker or begin to flake; this is normal and will resolve over time. Most areas require approximately 5-6 treatments spread out every four weeks for maximum results. As the sessions progress, individuals will begin to see visibly softer skin and an improvement in tone and texture.
Benefits of IPL:
- Fast – Treatments are completed in less than 30 minutes
- No downtime – Individuals can resume normal activities
- Customizable – Multiple areas of the body can be treated
- Safe – FDA-approved and minimal side effects
