A condition that is often bothersome to patients is melasma. It is a malfunction in the pigmentation in the skin. While natural pigmentation is present in the skin to give us an even skin tone and color, it can change and result in “splotches” of deep color. This may be bothersome for some patients, especially women who may be unable to cover these imperfections with cosmetics.
Definition of melasma
This condition, which is known as hyperpigmentation, is sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”. This is because it often appears in women while they are pregnant or afterwards. It can present as patches of skin that are gray or brown and typically shows up on the facial area. However, it can be anywhere on the body and may make patients self-conscious about their appearance.
What can cause or trigger melasma? It is unknown what exactly causes melasma, but it has been found that possible triggers include UV exposure and hormonal changes. Patients who have melasma or are at risk of developing melasma may benefit from ensuring they prevent sun exposure with regular applications of sunscreen and wearing appropriate clothes. Hormones may be controlled with medications if necessary.
Treatment for melasma varies. Sometimes it is long-term while other times it is only present for a short period of time. Patients who have this condition may ask about topical products to apply to the problem area to lighten the skin tone, while others may want to consider alternatives including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser therapies. Once the condition has been CONTROLLED, patients should pay close attention to prevention with sunscreen and hormonal regulation.
