Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Therapy
IPL, also known as photorejuvenation is a safe and effective way to treat the signs of aging and sun damaged skin. This gentle procedure utilizes a high-intensity light beam to target problem areas and give your skin a healthy, youthful glow. From freckles and wrinkles to brown spots and spider veins, this treatment is safe, effective, and often delivers dramatic improvements after just one session. Full results typically require several sessions, timed three to six weeks apart.
Everyone desires beautiful, clear skin. However, nature seems to sabotage us with visible imperfections, compounded by age and accumulated sun damage. Fortunately, skin rejuvenation techniques have advanced far beyond the difficult, painful procedures we had to endure in the past. At DSA Dermatology, we use an IPL system that delivers effective, comfortable photofacials for treating visible veins and sun damage.
IPL treatment utilizes intense light energy, delivered in short bursts. The light can safely penetrate the skin, correcting a wide variety of abnormalities. It can be used for the effective treatment of brown spots caused by sun exposure, redness from rosacea, and visible broken facial vessels.
Similar to laser treatment, IPL uses a light beam, which targets wrinkles and pigmentation, eliminating them safely with heat. The difference between these two technologies lies in the type of light energy used. Whereas laser energy is a single wavelength (color) of light energy, an IPL device works with a broad range of wavelengths. This makes IPL treatment highly customizable, because we can adjust the targeted depth and skin structures. Various components in the skin react differently to each wavelength of light. This individualized treatment can achieve exceptional results, without using excess energy, thereby preventing damage to other skin layers.
For optimal results, we usually recommend between three and five IPL sessions, scheduled from three to six weeks apart. Each session will last about 20 minutes, and you will be able to resume normal activities immediately. Side effects are rare, and usually very mild. You may notice a pink tinge to your skin, and possibly slight swelling or soreness. These effects should fade quickly, usually within a few hours of the procedure.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy uses intense, short bursts of light energy, targeting various skin layers. It is used for photorejuvenation, hair reduction, and superficial veins.
This gentle, versatile therapy can effectively treat acne, scars, wrinkles, sun damage, freckles, broken capillaries, rosacea, and more.
IPL can be used on the hands, arms, neck, chest, and face.
The IPL device works with a broad range of light wavelengths, which can be adjusted to target specific layers and components of the skin.
Depending on the area and the skin problems being treated, an IPL session may last from fifteen minutes to two hours. During your initial consultation, your physician will explain the expected duration of treatment for your individual skin concerns.
On average, from three to five treatments, scheduled about six weeks apart, are needed to achieve optimal results.
There is no lasting pain; any discomfort you feel should be temporary. Most patients compare the sensation to a fleeting pinprick or snapping rubber band.
This is a very safe, non-invasive procedure, which has very few, very minor potential side effects.
You may notice slight redness immediately after the procedure, which should fade quickly. However, there is no downtime and no recovery time associated with IPL therapy.
Most people are excellent candidates. However, it may not be recommended for certain individuals, such as those who react badly to burns, and those who are prone to excessive scarring, keloids, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation. Only a qualified physician can determine what treatments are right for you.
