(Ashville NC Citizen Times, Hartford CT Courant 3/19/13) North Carolina state house calls for prohibiting anyone younger than 18 from using commercial tanning beds and are re-writing restrictions that allow 14-17 year olds to use tanning beds with parental permission. The American Academy of Dermatology says the risk of Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increases 87 percent for those who use tanning beds before the age of 35 years.
Connecticut has said that tanning is not worth teenagers increasing their chances of developing skin cancer. The Connecticut General Assembly says it wants to send an unequivocal message by passing a proposed ban on the use of indoor tanning devices for those under the age of 18 years. There has been opposition from the tanning bed industry, but support from the World health Organization, American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. AGAIN, I WISH THE TANNING INDUSTRY COULD POLICE ITSELF, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE A VERY GOOD TRACK RECORD GIVEN THE FALSE CLAIMS, AND THE WITHHOLDING OF INFORMATION ABOUT HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS TO ITS CLIENTS. THIS IS ILLEGAL TO DO SO IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, AND I DO BELIEVE AS A SOCIETY WE SHOULD PROTECT OUR CHILDREN NOT VICTIMIZE THEM.
