Sclerotherapy treatment for varicose and spider veins in Plano, TX
Do you hide your legs in pants due to unsightly varicose or spider veins? Thirty to sixty percent of adults experience vein issues. Now you don’t have to be embarrassed. Drs. Daniel Achtman and Carmine McConnell offer sclerotherapy treatment in their Plano office.

Varicose versus spider veins
The two types of veins are often confused, but are different. Spider veins, or telangiectasia, are small, dilated superficial veins in red or blue that spread across the legs. Although they generally do not cause discomfort, they are caused by increased pressure on the veins.
Varicose veins, or varicosities, occur when the veins are not working properly. Found in about 25 percent of adults, this problem results in enlarged, overfilled veins. They are usually swollen, raised, and painful. Varicosities may be bluish or red. Causes of varicose veins include:
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
- Obesity
- Being on your feet for extended periods
- Family history
Sclerotherapy treatment
Sclerotherapy involves injecting the veins with a solution that collapses the vein. Blood is then rerouted to healthier veins. As the blood moves, the discoloration from the spider vein fades, generally within a few weeks of treatment.
Sclerotherapy is usually considered a cosmetic procedure as it is performed to improve the appearance of the veins. It may also help alleviate some of the pain, discomfort, or swelling associated with spider and varicose veins. As a safe treatment option, patients generally experience minimal, if any, side effects such as bruising or redness at the injection site.
