(10/11. New York AAD Summer Session). Teenage girls who used tanning beds in the 1990′s are the cause behind the sharp increase in melanomas in young women aged 25-34 years old. The primary melanomas seen in these young women, “often occur where the sun doesn’t shine, but the tanning beds do.” It seems that there is a major marketing trend targeted at these young women prior to prom times. Young females are especially susceptible to the damaging effects caused by artificial UV tanning radiation in the development of skin cancer. The AAD suggests that we need to see models who are not tan in magazines; the pale look needs to be “in.” Almost every case of a melanoma in a 20-year-old female is directly linked to tanning bed use. When compared to young men, the increased risk in young females appears to be related to one thing they do differently than the young men; they spend more time in tanning salons.
PROM NIGHT IS NOT WORTH A DEADLY SKIN CANCER. MONITOR YOUR DAUGHTERS, SUGGEST THAT PALE IS “IN,” OR CONSIDER PAYING FOR A SPRAY TAN.
