Dr. Daniel Achtman & Dr. Carmine McConnell explain how photofacial treatments help rejuvenate the face
Years spent sunbathing, acne scars from adolescence, and the aging process can leave you looking older than you really are. With IPL Photofacial from DSA Dermatology, Drs. Daniel Achtman and Carmine McConnell can help patients achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin.

IPL Photofacial is a rejuvenation treatment that can help patients who are experiencing issues with pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and texture. This non-surgical solution can drastically improve the appearance of your skin.
Photofacial is effective in treating:
- Rosacea
- Small Acne Scars
- Liver Spots
- Age Spots
- Sun Damage
- Facial veins
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Large pores
How it works:
Photofacials work by delivering fast pulses of light to the skin. Before treatment, all make-up will be removed and the skin will be gently cleansed. Patients will be fitted with protective eyewear and a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area. During Photofacial treatments, patients will notice short, bright bursts of light. The light is absorbed by the hemoglobin (red areas) and melanin (brown areas) in the skin. This process irritates the blood vessel walls and fragments pigment, which is then absorbed by the body. The result is a more even skin texture and tone.
Photofacial treatments are usually completed in less than a half an hour, and require no form of anesthetic as they cause very little discomfort. Prior to treatment patients are encouraged to stay out of the sun and tanning booths. Self-tanning products should be avoided for at least two weeks prior to treatment. Patients will need to share a list of any medications or dietary supplements they are currently taking to make sure they do not cause light sensitivity. Sometimes to improve the effects of IPL we will perform a microdermabrasion first which allows the laser to penetrate the red and brown areas better.
After treatment, most patients experience redness of the skin, similar to mild sunburn. Patients are free to apply make-up immediately after their session. Photofacial treatments require no downtime; patients can resume normal activities immediately. We usually ask that extreme exercise or alcohol use is avoided for 24 hours to ensure the best results.

Results from IPL photofacials appear gradually through the course of the treatment plan. A minimum of three to five sessions four weeks apart is suggested for optimal results, but you will see results after your first treatment. At the end of the treatment plan, most patients experience an elimination of brown spots and redness, more radiant skin texture, and a more youthful appearance.
