BE CAREFUL OF NON-AMERICAN, NON-FDA APPROVED, SKIN WHITENING PRODUCTS.

(The Time 10/22/13) The Japanese manufacturer Kanebo Cosmetics has issued an apology for a recall of products blamed for leaving thousands of customers with blotchy skin. This occurred after customers used a whitening product called” 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone,” known as ‘Rhododenol”. To date 15,192 cases have been reported. THERE ARE MANY, MANY SKIN LIGHTENING PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET. MOST MADE WITHIN THE US WILL BE SAFE. SOME MAY NOT BE VERY EFFECTIVE. BUT NOW, WITH THE INTERNET, IT IS EASY TO GET PRODUCTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. SOME OF THESE PRODUCTS, WHICH DO NOT UNDERGO FDA SCRUTINY, CAN BE UNSAFE. MOST OF THE SIDE EFFECTS REPORTED IN THE LITERATURE MENTION PRODUCTS FROM ASIAN OR AFRICAN COUNTRIES. SO BEWARE. IT SHOULD BE EASY TO FIND SOMETHING MADE IN THE USA. BETTER, ASK YOUR DERMATOLOGIST FOR ADVICESO YOU CAN GET SOMETHING SAFE AND EFFECTIVE.

DO IT AT LEAST ONCE!… A SINGLE SKIN EXAM REDUCES THE ODDS FOR INVASIVE MELANOMA.

(MedPage Today 3/8/13).

Over 400 cases of Melanoma were reviewed at the annual AAD meeting and researchers showed that at least one visit to the Dermatologist’s office were 37% less likely to have an invasive Melanoma.

THIS MEANS THAT THE MELANOMA’S WERE CAUGHT EARLY, AND THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. GET AN INVENTORY OF ALL YOUR MOLES AT LEAST ONCE BY A DERMATOLOGIST AND SEE WHAT MOLES NEED TO BE FOLLOWED, BIOPSIED OR ARE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. THINK ABOUT DOING THIS FOR YOUR CHILDREN AS WELL- ESPECIALLY THOSE TEENAGERS THAT START TO ENJOY THE SUN.

WANT TO STAY GOOD LOOKING? USE THAT SUNSCREEN DAILY, NOT JUST ON VACATION!

(USA Today, Annals of Internal Medicine 6/4/13)

Formal studies of 900 Caucasians for 4 1/2 years in Australia, show that DAILY application of UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sunscreen were 24% less likely to show signs of aging.

THIS SEEMS OBVIOUS BUT MANY PATIENTS STILL ONLY APPLY THEIR SUNSCREEN WHEN THEY “REALLY GO IN THE SUN”, SUCH AS GOLFING, BOATING, GOING TO THE BEACH, ETC. IF YOU LIVE IN TEXAS, LIKE AUSTRALIA, THERE IS ENOUGH SUN ALL THE TIME WITH ANY ACTIVITY TO PRODUCE DAMAGE AND AGING. EVEN IF YOU ARE IN AN OFFICE MOST OF THE DAY, THE 30 MINUTES YOU GO BACK AND FORTH FOR LUNCH, AND 15 MINUTES YOU STOP AT THE GROCERY STORE AFTER WORK, AMOUNTS TO ALMOST AN HOUR OF FULL UNPROTECTED SUNBATHING A DAY. THIS IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE AGING AND SKIN CANCER RISK OVER A FEW YEARS. SO, TO KEEP YOUR SELF GORGEOUS JUST FIND A BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN THAT YOU LIKE ENOUGH TO APPLY EVERY DAY! IF YOU THINK ALL SUNSCREENS ARE YUCKY, I CAN GUARANTEE YOU WE CAN FIND ONE THAT YOU WILL LIKE!

GREEN” COULD MAKE YOU SCREAM: SOME ORGANIC SKIN CARE PRODUCTS CAN TRIGGER SERIOUS ALLERGIES.

(New York Times 4/11). Long chemical names on labels can be hard to decipher, even for Doctors. There can be a common name, a chemical name, and a botanical name, and it is difficult to know all the names for an ingredient. Canada and Europe mandate products to give clear common sense word warnings for potential allergens. The U.S. labeling laws are much more relaxed, and many skin and hair products are filled with potential allergy triggers, and the “green and organic” versions are the worst offenders. You may think CAMELLIA OLEIFERA is a nice flower; did you guess instead that it is a name for green tea? For example, some lip balms don’t list tree nuts in any ordinary form of English, but hide it in a complicated chemical name. People who are allergic to tree nuts, and ingest the lip balm can have anaphylactic allergies that can be life threatening, or many people have common skin contact allergies, and upon exposure, can develop horrible eczema.*** IF YOU HAVE SERIOUS ALLERGIES DON’T ASSUME A “GREEN” PRODUCT IS SAFE. IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND AN INGREDIENT, TELL THE PHARMACIST YOUR ALLERGIES AND ASK HIM TO DECIPHER FOR YOU. IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO TOPICAL NEOMYCIN ANTIBIOTIC, WHICH IS QUITE COMMON, WOULD YOU PICK UP ON IT BEING LISTED AS AMINOGLYCOSIDE? NOW WHY WOULDN’T THEY JUST CALL IT NEOMYCIN? YET A KITTY LITTER BOX HAS A WARNING NOT TO FILL IT WITH WATER AND SUBMERGE YOUR HEAD, AS IT MAY RESULT IN DROWNING!!! GO FIGURE?!

WHY IS VITAMIN B3 BECOMING SO POPULAR AND WHY IS IT HELPFUL TO YOUR SKIN?

VITAMIN B3 is also known as NIACINAMIDE and is found naturally in many foods. Used topically, it is safe and has almost no reported side effects. Topical Niacinamide has been shown to improve the skin barrier function so it decreases irritation and dryness. It also decreases the appearance of photo aging such as improving texture, hyperpigmentation, and redness. In addition it can decrease sebum (or oil) production in the skin. It also has a calming effect on acne, and it is added to many creams so that they won’t aggravate acne or rosacea.

*** YOU WILL SEE NIACINAMIDE/VITAMIN B3 IN MANY PRODUCTS SUCH AS CREAMS AND SUNSCREENS. MAKE SURE THE CONCENTRATION IS HIGH ENOUGH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, SO COMPANIES DON’T JUST LIST IT TO CATCH YOUR ATTENTION BUT CHEAPLY USE SO LITTLE THAT IT IS OF NO BENEFIT TO YOU. THE GLOSS SYSTEM, WHICH YOU CAN FIND LISTED UNDER OUR PRODUCTS SECTION ON OUR WEBSITE, MAKES A FACIAL MOISTURIZER CALLED INTENSIVE RECOVERY COMPLEX.
