Acne treatment from a dermatologist in 75093 (Plano TX)

Struggling with acne can be hard for many patients. Both teenagers and adults can suffer from acne, which has an impact on your appearance and your self-esteem. Not everyone’s skin responds to treatment the same way, which can make acne a difficult condition to treat. At DSA Dermatology, we offer a variety of treatment options to improve acne. Our dermatologists are experts in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of acne types.

What is acne?

Acne is caused when oil secretions and dead skin cells plug the hair follicles. It commonly develops on the face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders. Inflammation and the potential for scarring develop when the follicle becomes plugged and develops an infection with bacteria.

Often, by the time patients come into our office for acne treatment, they have already experimented with a variety of over-the-counter remedies with unsatisfactory results.

In our experience, successful treatment of Acne will often include a combination of treatment methods. Some of the most common are:

Changing your skin care routine

Sometimes, all it takes to improve minor acne is to make small changes to your skin care regimen. The use of medicated cleansers, along with oil-free moisturizers and makeup, and not picking pimples will help. But it is important to be evaluated early by a dermatologist to make sure that your acne will not leave scars and there is nothing you are doing to make the acne worse.

Topical Medications

Topical retinoids, azelaic acid, and certain antibiotics can all be effective in treating acne. Many times our dermatologists will recommend a combination of medications.

Oral Medications

For more severe cases of acne, oral antibiotics, even some types of birth control pills can help, as well as more powerful medications such as Accutane may be warranted to prevent scarring.

Microdermabrasion gently rejuvenates skin using tiny exfoliating crystals that remove dead skin cells. It can help reduce the appearance of acne and scars and improve tone and texture of your skin. Sometimes gentle peels such as glycolic acid can reduce oil content, pore clogging, and inflammation that occurs in acne.

Sometimes there can be a large, persistent, and isolated deep acne cyst. If these rupture they can leave significant scars. Dermatologists are qualified to inject these cysts with an anti-inflammatory medication and have them resolve within 3-5 days to avoid serious scarring.

Tanda Zap

The Tanda Zap system combines blue light technology with a warming vibration that can effectively clear mild to moderate acne breakouts in less than a day. The blue light technology is effective at killing the bacteria that cause inflammation.

Tanda Clear+

Tanda Clear+ builds on the successful blue light technology of Tanda Zap, but offers a solution for a larger treatment area. Tanda Clear+ and Tanda Zap are unique, and unlike most acne treatments, will not cause redness or drying of the skin.
