Juvéderm

Juvéderm is an excellent option for treating areas of the face such as nasolabial folds (smile lines running from the corners of the mouth up to the nose), droopy circles under the eyelids, jaw line, cheeks, and lips. In some cases, dermal fillers such as Juvéderm may be used to reduce the appearance of scars from trauma or acne. However, dermal fillers alone may not be sufficient treatment for deep facial wrinkles and vertical lines around the lips. Therefore, the physicians at DSA Dermatology may suggest a combination of treatments including Botox®, fillers, and laser procedures.

Juvéderm for lip contouring

Our lips tend to become thinner and droop as we age. The voluptuous shape of the colored portion and border of the lip diminishes. Any woman who desires fuller “pouty” lips can benefit from lip augmentation with dermal fillers. This is a great benefit for those who have thin lips lacking a definable border.

You have many options for lip augmentation, both temporary and permanent. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) based products such as Juvéderm and Restylane are an increasingly popular option for safe, natural, instant results. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally, acting as a building block of healthy, youthful skin. The levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin decrease with age, which is a contributing factor to sagging skin and thinning lips.

What to expect

Treatment with dermal fillers is simple and comfortable.
  • Your doctor will take a thorough medical history during the initial consultation.
  • If you are taking any blood thinners, including ibuprofen, aspirin, or fish oil, you may be advised to discontinue use two weeks prior to treatment, with the approval of your primary physician.
  • Your lips will be numbed before the injections, for a truly comfortable experience.
  • Restylane or Juvéderm injections yield beautiful, instant results.

Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, your lips will still be numb, making them feel larger. We recommend using lip balm to prevent drying. You may notice tenderness in your lips the evening after treatment, though it should not be significant enough to interfere with eating, drinking, or normal activities. On occasion (usually in individuals taking blood thinners), there may be some soreness for up to a week, and mild bruising. If this occurs, it can be disguised with cosmetics. For most patients, the benefits of lip augmentation last from six to nine months, although everyone metabolizes the fillers at different rates.

Juvéderm FAQ

The average is six months to one year, though it varies from one patient to another.
Dermal fillers are generally used on the lower two-thirds of your face. Botox or Dysport can be used on the upper portion.
The entire appointment lasts approximately one hour (including numbing time).
You may experience slight swelling, lasting from two to seven days. There is also a risk of mild bruising at the site of the injection. Therefore, we advise discontinuing non-essential blood thinners before and after the procedure. Be sure to check with your primary physician before making any changes in your medications.
The precise amount is different for everyone. Your doctor will determine the optimal amount for maximum benefit with a natural result.
There is a potential of reacting badly to virtually anything. However the chance of adverse reaction to an HA based filler is less than one percent.
We offer local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during treatment.
Yes. If you change your mind, we can use an agent to dissolve the filler.
In most cases, you will look just like you did before treatment. However, some patients experience an increase in natural collagen production, leaving a lasting, youthful appearance.
